From TALS Student to Devils' Employee

When Tom Reeves saw the opportunity to study with the Tasmania Academy of Leadership and Sport, it sparked a bold decision. He left the Gold Coast behind and returned home to Tasmania. Less than a year later, he’s on track to complete his dual diploma, and has stepped into a new role with the Tasmania Football Club, helping lead the very program that brought him home.

Tom’s Academy experience has been hands-on, practical, and deeply connected to the Tasmanian sporting landscape. His learning has extended beyond the classroom into elite facilities, real-world environments, and access to some of the best in the business.

“Over the course of this year I have learned a lot, been in a great environment and been able to learn from some of the very best in the industry. I even had the opportunity to interview Jack Riewoldt in class a few months back.”

Working alongside key sporting organisations has given Tom insight into how the industry operates, and how that connects to what he’s learning in the classroom.

In June, he was appointed as Engagement Officer for the Tasmania Football Club, focused on promoting the Academy and supporting the next intake of students.

“In this role I am responsible for promoting the Tasmania Academy of Leadership and Sport, with my first major task being recruitment of students for the 2026 intake.”

It’s a role built on lived experience.

“I am loving the role so far. I am utilising my first-hand experience talking to prospective students, encouraging them to make the step I made and be a part of the program next year. A step I know from experience is one they will never look back from.”

Tom’s story reflects what the Academy is all about; building pathways, growing talent, and keeping it local. In the past year, more than 50 Tasmanians have begun their dual diplomas through the Academy. In 2026, the program expands to Launceston, with support from TasTAFE and sporting partners across the state.

“Just go for it,” Tom says. “You’ll learn from the best, gain real experience, and discover how much opportunity there is, right here in Tasmania.”
