After a highly successful debut year, Tasmania’s first dedicated sports education academy is set to extend its reach to Launceston in 2026, opening new pathways for regional students to build careers in the sports industry.
The Tasmania Academy of Leadership and Sport, launched less than a year ago, has already supported more than 50 Tasmanian students studying dual diplomas in leadership, management, and sport through TasTAFE.
Real-World Industry Experience
Participants gain hands-on placements with some of the state’s most prominent sporting organisations, including the Tasmania Football Club, AFL Tasmania, Tasmania JackJumpers, Netball Tasmania, and Cricket Tasmania.
Jesse O’Hara, Consumer Business Manager at the Tasmania Football Club and the driving force behind the program’s creation, said its first year had surpassed all expectations.
“Our students have been outstanding, and the support from our sporting partners, TasTAFE, and guest speakers from across the sector has been incredible,” O’Hara said.
Expanding Opportunities Across the State
The move to Launceston is aimed at strengthening the sports workforce throughout Tasmania while making the program more accessible to students living in the North.
One of the program’s first participants, Thomas Reeves, moved from the Gold Coast to enrol. His gamble has already paid off, he now works as an Engagement Officer at the Tasmania Football Club, promoting the academy and encouraging the next intake of students.
“When I saw the opportunity, I knew it was the right step. My goal was to work for the Tasmania Football Club, and now I’m here,” Reeves said.
Strong Industry-Education Partnership
TasTAFE Interim CEO Will McShane said the academy was a model example of aligning training with real industry needs.
“By collaborating with industry partners, we can deliver programs that prepare students for a growing sports sector,” McShane said.
